Originally I suspected rebus squares, but they only worked on the downs, which wouldn't be terribly elegant. As it turns out, this puzzle was. In addition to Horace's listing above, I enjoyed POPEYE (49D Tatooed toon) and PAGODAS (62A Places to meditate). Oddly, it took a few to get the former, which should have come immediately to mind, and one doesn't often think of a pagoda as a place to meditate.
