Wednesday, April 4, 2018, Weird Al Yankovic and Eric Berlin

The master of cheesy satires and groaningly bad puns pens a puzzle replete with cheesy puns on movie titles?

I say yes, yes, and yes again.

My favorite is probably THEPELICANBRIE, because that's ludicrous. But all four are strong, if somewhat dated, examples of moviedom, and all four have, well... gouda puns. Cheddar kidding!

I might note that the inclusion of CLEESE brings to mind the best comedy sketch ever devised from an exhaustive listing of cheeses. And his name rhymes with it as well.

Other Weird Al related entries include:

  • LEHRER: the ur-master of satiric songs.
  • ATEMPO
  • CLEF
  • TUNE - three musical terms
  • ASCAP - having to do with songwriting
  • CORN, for obvious reasons
It might even be possible that ALDENTE is a reference.

And then you get 46D: Rug you don't walk on (TOUPEE). Hah! Clearly, Mr. Yankovic and Mr. Berlin crated this puzzle very Caerphilly.

Nice review. Quite an abondance of punning! I's'curd to take over after two weeks of reviews like this! It's making m'emmental! ... sorry.

  2. In all seriousness, I was very happy to see Weird Al's name on this puzzle. Finally, a celebrity I know and like! Love the inclusion of LEHRER, of course, and I also love your calling him the "ur-master." Apt!

Funny review. My final entry was the "S" of the LEGOLAS/SARA cross, neither of which I knew. Great accomplishment of a puzzle for Weird Al. As people know, I met CLEESE, but never met an EVERLY, his symmetrical entry. I never heard of Mr. LEHRER, which is too bad since I see he's a mathematician.

    2. Good lord. I'm sure you've heard one or more of his songs. "The Elements" is one I play in class oftentimes.

  4. Leave it to Weird Al to put some cheese into the puzzle.
My time was 55 minutes, flat.
