LOSEWEIGHT. Even though I don't make resolutions, it's still the first item on my to-do list in the New Year, that's for sure. Today it is symbolized by the word "pound" shedding a letter with each successive theme entry.
IRISHPOUND - *Currency replaced by the euro
KOIPOND - *Decorative garden feature with fish
TWOPEASINAPOD - *Almost-identical pair, figuratively
RIVERPO - *It flows through Turin

I had a couple of early ERRS, including UNesco for UNICEF (Humanitarian org. since 1946) and ADDins instead of ADDSTO (Supplements). I chuckled at SOUSA (Composer whose work might be appropriate during March Madness?), and ARIGATO (Thank you, in Tokyo) was made easier for me by having just watched the latest season of "Queer Eye," which was filmed in Japan.
I liked the uncommon SHIRKS (Neglects, as responsibilities), the always-odd-sounding-to-me BOOGIE (Get down on the dance floor), the exotic PAPAYA (Tropical fruit with orange flesh), and the homey SKEIN (Yarn purchase). The silent and subtle SLYNODS and WAVESBYE made an interesting pair, and thinking of the TRICOLOR flags of France and Italy brings back many happy memories for me and, I feel I can rightly say, also for Frannie and Colum.

ReplyDeleteI had a couple of slowdowns: I misspelled SKEIN, but corrected it with its two relevant crosses, RESCUE and TWOPEASINAPOD; and I quickly entered TwoCOLOR, even though I know that at least the French flag is commonly referred to as a TRICOLOR (and I know what the two flags look like, too, so there's no excuse, really). However, that one, too, was easily and quickly repaired by crosses. My own weight stays relatively stable throughout the year, as many people know, mostly due, in great part, to my strict regimen of exercise and Mediterranean (and highly predictable) diet. That said, I wouldn't mind shedding three or four pounds. Nice that PANAMA and RAYBAN abut.

ReplyDeleteI love that it's the word "pound" that loses weight! I have not personally seen the RIVERPO, but speaking of TRICOLOR, I have seen the Arno, Tiber, Seine, and possibly the Loire, but I don't remember for sure about that one.
I was slowed down by AReGATO but one letter off wasn't too bad for a word I'm not sure I've ever seen written down, and I did eventually get the last letter from the cross.
ReplyDeleteAnd I did like seeing the Po in a puzzle. Almost makes me want to break the "no two letter words" rule more often, although of course RIVERPO is one solution to that.
